Let's Talk About Sex, Baby

Posted by Amina AlTai on

SEX...that scandalous, pleasurable topic we hate that we love talking about. First and foremost, it's human nature, and nothing to be ashamed about. In fact, there are actually plentiful health benefits that go hand in hand (or, ya know...) with getting frisky.

Here are just a few reasons why you should take some time out of your busy day to get down and dirty...

Stress Reduction:

Feeling overwhelmed? Welcome to the club! Studies show that sexual activity releases endorphins and oxytocin - two hormones that trigger a lasting "feel good" effect in the brain that fights off anxiousness and depression.

Sounder Sleep:

These same stress-reducing hormones will put you in snooze-mode like a lullaby. And if you are lucky enough to reach "the big O" with your partner, your body will also release prolactin - another hormone that is more highly active in our bodies while we are asleep. Just try and keep bedtime action low-key and affectionate or you might find yourself more energized instead...but that's what morning quickies are for.

Burns Calories:

On the contrary, if you do decide to go for it, acrobatics style, you can burn around 250 calories, on average, by spending some quality time between the sheets. Probably one of the more rewarding ways to get your cardio workout accomplished, if you ask us. Why not improve your body while having it worshiped at the same time?!

Improves Heart Health:

And, no, we don't mean sex is good for your heart in the cheesy romance novel kind of way. Getting physical, as you may have noticed, tends to boost your heart rate and will also aid in keeping estrogen and testosterone levels balanced. People who have a healthy sex life tend to live longer...and that's a fact.

Natural Pain Reduction:

The pain relieving effects of having an orgasm are actually pretty much equivalent to popping a few aspirin (and much better for your body). Studies show that reaching that special state of euphoria can actually block out pain -- from headaches to menstrual cramps, and even aches associated with arthritis. Self-stimulation works as well...just sayin'.

Better Skin:

It's true, sex actually makes you prettier. The "afterglow" is not just a myth, people! Less stress means fewer wrinkles. And also, maintaining a solid sleep schedule is the best way to look and feel awesome. Additionally, estrogen aids in a softer complexion...and shinier hair, to boot!

So, basically what we are saying here is...let's get it on. Keep it safe. Have fun. Look and feel better than ever.
