Springtime Allergies: Our Favorite Natural Remedies

Posted by Julia McVeigh on

Watery eyes, scratchy throat, post-nasal drip and a lingering cough suddenly clouding your everyday existence? Sounds like you have a case of seasonal allergies – and, trust us, we know how big of a drag that can be. Aside from the aforementioned symptoms, suffering from seasonal allergies can also induce fatigue and compromise your immune system, turning a pesky issue into a serious problem. But before you turn to OTC medication that will leave you feeling even fuzzier headed (and dry mouthed), test out some of our favorite natural remedies, below.

Nettle Tea

Derived from the stinging nettle plant, this is our go-to beverage for when we feel the sneezes and wheezes come on. This is because the stinging nettle plant has potent anti-inflammatory qualities that affect the key receptors and enzymes associated with allergic reactions. Furthermore, even though this plant contains histamines – which would seem counterproductive – they are present in low levels and actually help alleviate severe allergic reactions. Look for nettle tea in your local natural grocery or online at places like Thrive Market.

Neti Pot

When we feel some serious post-nasal drip coming on, we reach for our trusty ceramic neti pot. In essence, a neti pot uses a saline solution (distilled water and non-iodized salt) to irrigate your nasal passages; using the spouted end of the pot, you delicately pour the solution into one nostril at a time. In doing so, you’re not only “clearing out” excess mucus and buildup, you’re actually killing harmful bacteria that can turn into the dreaded sinus infection. Indeed, research shows that regular use of a neti pot helps relieve chronic sinusitis, as well as reduce the need for OTC medication. Couple of tips: Always use distilled / sterilized water (boiling and then letting it cool works) as tap water can contain harmful levels of iodine and fluoride; furthermore, we recommend using the ceramic versions over the weird plastic varieties.

Manuka Honey

The uses of Manuka honey – a very special honey derived in New Zealand – are seemingly endless, with one of them being the treatment of seasonal allergies. This is because this honey has eight times the bacterial activity of regular honey and can help enhance immunity, reduce inflammation and kill microbes. We recommend consuming up to a tablespoon per day when you start feel your seasonal allergies come on.

A Shower!

This may sound as basic – and boring – as any recommendation out there, but trust us, it’s a game changer. Come this time of year, it’s not uncommon to emerge from the outdoors covered in trigger-inducing pollen and allergens. Sometimes, you’re able to actually see the green coating (yuck); other times, in might be undetectable. Showering before bed each night ensures you removing all of that nastiness before getting into bed – it’s a must-do for any sufferer of serious allergies.

Apple Cider Vinegar

A darling of the health and wellness worlds, apple cider vinegar (ACV) is heralded for its bacteria-rich (good bacteria) composition and pH-balancing properties. It’s also loaded in healthy nutrients and vitamins like acetic and malic acid, Vitamin A, B6, and C, which help to boost immunity and fight the symptoms of seasonal allergies. We recommend drinking ACV daily; the ideal mix is 1-2 teaspoons in 8 ounces of water. Cheers!
